What words do you know?

Currently in production and scheduled for a 2021 launch, Moji is a fast-paced, family-friendly card game for two or more people who know words. If you’re reading this, that includes you!

Basic game play is deceptively simple: each card in a Moji deck represents a letter of the alphabet.

Once everyone reveals one card from their stack, the first person to voice a (real) word containing at least two of the exposed letters wins the hand! But there’s so much more to Moji: challenges, themes, variations, even targeted letter placement within a word. No wonder those who’ve played it say it’s multiple games in one!

Up for a challenge?

In Moji, you won’t have a choice! Basic game play is enhanced when you incorporate challenge cards!

Suddenly, your words must feature the exposed letters in specific places, or they must be a minimum length, or be from a category like movies, books or animals!

Any questions?

(Incidentally, as an acronym, “FAQ” is not a valid word in Moji!)

  • I know a lot of words. Will that make me a better Moji player?
  • It certainly can’t hurt.
  • Do I need to be a good speller to play Moji?
  • Not nessecarily.
  • How long does one round of Moji take?
  • 5 minutes, or maybe just 1 minute. How quick are your wits?
  • Does the word “subdermatoglyphic” qualify as a winning word in Moji?
  • Only if it contains the appropriate letters. And you say it first.
  • Are challenge cards optional?
  • Yes, but once you start using them, you won’t think so.
  • Would the answer “Taylor Swift” qualify as an adjective or a famous person?
  • Depending on the challenge card, yes.
  • How much do vowels cost in Moji?
  • Nothing! This isn’t Wheel of Fortune.
  • What if I think of a great word, but my opponent says it first?
  • There’s always the next hand.

Did you know in Japanese, “moji” means “letter?”

And in our family, “Moji” also means “new puppy,” because that’s what we named her!

The Moji story

Like many practitioners of language (okay, “humans”), I grew up with a passion for word games, from Scrabble and Boggle to Wheel of Fortune and newspaper jumbles. Identifying and assembling words from individual letters became an obsession of mine.

While all those games are still family favorites, I thought it would be great fun to combine the universal skill of puzzle-solving with the spontaneous luck of the draw. It just so happened I had three boys in the house who could serve as my test market.

After much refinement and experimentation, I’m delighted to finally share Moji with you. I hope you have as much fun playing it as I’ve had creating it!
